For the past year, I’ve been hanging out with kids from grades 3 to 7 after school for band practice. This was my youngest son’s first year in the band and if you ask him, he’s just there because I decided to volunteer. Nevermind that he’s been playing drums for about 2 years now and has the knack for it.
If you don’t know already, I play the flute and my oldest son plays trumpet. It took a little experimentation to know what was the best instrument for him – he played recorder in grade 2 (didn’t love it) Tried clarinet but couldn’t figure out the figurings and then he tried a trumpet and bingo.
He’s been playing trumpet for 2 years now and I’m very proud of when he plays- when both of my kids play it’s kinda amazing.
We just finished the year with a freewill concert, where two school bands joined together to fundraise. That in itself is amazing… because the only time we practiced together was right before the concert.
The other band had more instruments so they recorded themselves practicing so we could judge how fast they were playing.
That was it.
We came together and rocked it.
I had the whole concert recorded, so please take a listen if you dare. Remember, these are children playing. I’m pretty proud of them for learning some hard pieces, and three new pieces ( Jus’ Plain blues, Let’s Rock and Ghostbusters) just for this concert.
I hope you enjoyed our playing. Some of the kids that I’ve helped this year will be moving on to the high school, where I hope they will continue to play their instruments. I’ve already seen some kids move to the high school and most of them are playing or singing and it’s pretty special seeing them grow as musicians.
